DOZENS of firefighters scrambled to tackle a fire in the lift shaft of a South London tower block this evening.
Around 60 firefighters and eight fire engines raced to the flats in Bermondsey just before 10pm.
A woman was treated by medics and about 50 people were evacuated before crews arrived.
The London Fire Brigade took about an hour and a half to get the fire under control, with crews still damping down.
An LFB statement said: "The lift shaft of the building between the seventh and the tenth floors was alight.
"The Brigade was called at 2146 and the fire was under control by 2304.
"Fire crews from Deptford, Old Kent Road, Dockhead, Peckham, Greenwich and surrounding fire stations are at the scene.
"The cause of the fire is under investigation."
Witnesses reported seeing a huge emergency service response and smoke coming from the roof of a building.
Shocked neighbours to the block on Rotherhithe New Road filmed multiple fire engines parked up as crews took on the blaze.
